Though she never married or had children, Grier has had multiple high-profile relationships over the years, including basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and comedian Richard Pryor.
In 1988, Grior was diagnosed with stage-four cervical cancer and given 18 months to live but, thanks to vigorous treatment, made a full recovery.
