There Were Two Predecessors To Air Force One

President Kennedy was the first President to fly on what was called “Air Force One” in the early 1960’s.  Two previous Presidents also had their own personal airplanes for travel to and from the White House.  In the 1940’s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had the “Sacred Cow”, a Douglas VC-54 C outfitted with an elevator lift for the President’s wheelchair.  President Harry S. Truman had the “Independence”, a Douglas VC-118 named after his hometown in Missouri in the 1950’s.
